Tannersville Bog Walks
Monroe County Conservation District's
Environmental Education Center


May 1 - June 5, 2013 at 1pm

Beginning Wednesday, May 1 through June 5, 2013, the E.E. Center will be offering weekly walks through the Tannersville Bog every Wednesday from 1pm to 3:30pm. These 2½ hour walks will be guided by an Environmental Educator from the Center who will lead you through The Tannersville Bog, a very unique northern boreal bog for this area, owned by The Nature Conservancy. Spring is an excellent time to explore the Bog's unique plant life which includes insect-eating plants.
 
Participants will meet at the Bog Parking Area by 1 p.m. Cost: $6/non-members, $4/E.E. Center or Nature Conservancy members and children under 12. Please wear appropriate footwear – no open-toed shoes or sandals.  Pre-registration is required.

During May: Introduction to performing arts workshop. A call out to all actors, or those who have an interest in learning the finer points of acting, singing, stage combat and stage makeup. Centenary College Performing Arts will teach a free 4 part workshop. Dates are May 18: Stage Combat and June 1: Stage Makeup. All workships will be held on Saturdays from 10AM - 11:30 AM. You may sign up for one class or all 4! Funding for this series of workshops is made possible by The Warren County Cultural & Heritage Commission.

May 13-19: Children's Book Week. An annual event celebrating the joy of reading. Sponsored bt the Children's Book Council, Children's Book Week is the longest-running literacy initiative in the country, having been first observed in 1919 to promote the quality in children's books. Across the country, libraries, schools and bookstores will hold events in celebration of reading. Stop in anytime this week for the following: pick up a story starter from one of several children's authors and finish the story yourself!; see if you can solve puzzles based on children's books!; pick out a book, either something new or an old favorite, from one of our children's book displays. 

May 15, 4:30 PM: Children's Book Week Story & Craft Program. The Warren County Library will host a children's story and craft program. Enjoy a selection fo popular children's stories and make a craft based on your favorite. Please sign up.

May 23, 7:00 PM: Designing with Perennials. Design a colorful garden with the use of perennials. Suzanne Berferon will guide you through the steps needed in creating a showplace of summer long flowers. One luckly attendee will also win a lovely planter of colorful perennials. Registration is necessary.

Online Youth Summer Camps
Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC)


Beginning Wednesday, May 15th

Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) is offering online courses for youth ages 14-17, May 15, June 19, July 17, and August 14, from the comfort of your own home.
 
Each course lasts six weeks and includes lessons, assignments, quizzes, a final exam, and the opportunity for discussion in chat rooms. Suggested courses include 12 steps to a successful job search, grammar refresher, writing for children, start a pet-sitting business, lose weight and keep it off, and instant Italian. A certificate of completion will be issued after completion of the course.

LGBT Film Series
Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas

May 14 - June 9, 2013

The 2nd Annual LGBT Film Series at the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks’ Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas will take place May 14-June 9. The month-long series, designed to raise awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues, will feature seven films, as well as special discussion sessions and talkbacks hosted by prominent members of the Lehigh Valley’s LGBT community.
 
The 2013 LGBT Film series gets underway May 14 with Hedwig and the Angry Inch, an adaptation of the hit off-Broadway musical. Tickets for each film are $10 regular, $8 for students and seniors, and $7.50 for ArtsQuest Members. Relay For Life Meeting
Easton Hospital

Easton will hold its monthly planning and celebration meeting on Monday, May 20, from 7:00-8:30 at Kroners Auditorium, Easton Hospital. All are welcome and encouraged to come out to learn more about the Relay For Life.
 
The Relay itself will take place June 14-15, 2013, from noon to noon at Metzgar Field at Lafayette College in Easton. This will be the Easton Relay’s 11th year. To date there are 22 teams signed up and 33 survivors registered.

Freemansburg Municipal Park

Wednesday, May 22 - Saturday, May 25, 2013

Freemansburg Community Carnival will be held at Freemansburg Municipal Park on Cambria & Washington Streets in Freemansburg on Wednesday, May 22 through Saturday, May 25, 2013. Hours are 6pm-10pm on Wednesday - Friday and 4pm-10pm on Saturday. On Wednesday and Thursday from 6pm-9:30pm, enjoy "pay one price" ride special for $18. Also, Balloons the Clown will be there Thursday at 7pm. Other fun activities include food, games, rides, face painting by Kim Einsla and a midway by Goodtime Amusements LLC.

Proceeds from the carnival will be donated to the Freemansburg Park & Recreation Department.

The Red Show
ArtQuest's Banana Factory

Now Through May 22

The creativity and vision of the resident artists at ArtsQuest’s Banana Factory are showcased during the seventh annual "Red Show," taking place on the third floor of the arts center, 25 W. Third St., Bethlehem. The works of art will be on display through May 22.

The Red Show features a wide variety of two- and three-dimensional works created by the visual artists who have their studios on the third floor of the Banana Factory.  Artists included in the show include painter, mural artist and printmaker Trisha Mae Samuel; sculptor and ceramicist Khalil Allaik; painter and fashion designer Lara Bly Allaik; painters Nessa Grainger, Andrew Kish and Rigo Peralta; sculptor Virginia Abbott; and stained glass artist Octavio Peña. Also taking part in the exhibit are mixed media artist Valerie Breaux Haaf; jewelry maker Kevin Herbst Haaf; mosaic artist Kim Hogan; and photographer Bruce J. Ward.

Radio historian Joe Hehn  invites his audience to travel back in time to the Golden Age of Radio as he shares his knowledge of old time music and drama as well as little known facts about themedium’s biggest names.

2013 FREDDY© Awards
State Theatre Center of the Arts

The Awards Show will take place Thursday, May 24, 2013 at 7pm


The State Theatre Center for the Arts announces the 2013 FREDDY© Awards. In it's 11th year, the program recognizes and rewards exceptional accomplishments in the production and performance of musical theater in high schools in Lehigh and Northampton Counties, Pennsylvania, and Warren County, New Jersey.
 
The 2013 program will feature 30 schools, including a first time appearance by Lehigh Valley Christian High School who will present Annie in April.

Concert for the Cure
Palisades High School

Friday, May 24, 2013 at 7pm

Come support finding a cure for breast cancer research and enjoy the sounds of Groovitude and the James Supra Blues Band at the same time. Come to the Concert for the Cure on Friday, May 24 at 7pm at the Palisades High School Auditorium in Kintnersville, PA. Doors open at 6:30pm.

Cost is a $5 donation. All proceeds from the concert benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Squadron 807 of the Civil Air Patrol will be hosting an all you can eat flapjack breakfast on Saturday, May 25 from 8am to 11am at the Applebee's on Easton-Nazareth Highway in Palmer Township.  Cost is $7 per person and $4 for children 10 and under.  There will also be aerospace educational activities for children.
World War II Revisited Living History Bivouac
Pennsylvannia Military Museum

Saturday and Sunday, May 25th and 26th, 2013 From 10am till 1pm

Axis and Allied  WWII re-enactors bivouac on the grounds of the Pennsylvania Military Museum portraying field life in the European Theater of Operations, 1944-45.  A small squad tactical demonstration against German opposition is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. each day; Bivouac and tactical open to the public 10:00 a.m. till 4:00 p.m. Call ahead for itinerary. *Annual  PENNSYLVANIA  MILITARY MUSEUM, Centre County.

Memorial Day Ceremony
Williams Township Municipal Building

Sunday, May 26, 2013 at 6pm

Williams Township residents will hold a Memorial Day Ceremony on Sunday, May 26, at 6pm  to honor fallen heroes, living veterans, and service persons on active duty.

The sunset ceremony will be held at the Williams Twp. Municipal Building at 655 Cider Press Road. Robert Wagner, a retired Captain in U.S. Army and township resident, will deliver the address.

Also participating are the Wilson Area High School Brass Ensemble, Boy Scout Troop 31 of Williams Twp., Pastor Brett Kindig of Christ Evangelical Congregational Church, the firing squad of Marine Corps League/Northampton County Detachment, students from Williams Township Elementary School, members of the Veterans Memorial Committee, and many individual citizens.

The community at large is invited to join this program of recognition. Parking is available at the Williams Township Municipal Building.

Peanut Butter Collection
St. James' Episcopal Church

Monday, May 27, 2013

St. James’ Episcopal Church will be marching in the Memorial Day parade collecting jars of peanut butter or donations for the 2013 Summer Backpack program.  This program provides food to the hungry children of the greater Hackettstown area and provides relief for family food budgets in homes where unemployment, underemployment or disability impact on the food needs of children.  Every year United Way of Northern New Jersey is a dedicated sponsor of this Summer Backpack program. 
 
If you are going to the parade please remember to bring a chair and sunblock for you, and a jar of peanut butter for a needy child. If you miss us in the parade, we have a donation bucket on the front porch of the Mitcham House at 214 Washington Street.

DIsplay runs from May 26th - 28th

Embassy Bank is inviting the community to submit photos of family members, neighbors and friends who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces for the third-annual 'Our Hometown Heroes' display at SteelStacks Memorial Day weekend, May 26-28. The display will include hundreds of images of local servicemen and women from all branches of the military.

Submissions for Our Hometown Heroes are being accepted at  www.artsquest.org/memorialday from April 1-30. Photos should be high-resolution images in one of the following file formats: jpeg, tiff, bitmap or PDF file. Color and black & white photographs may also be dropped off at any Lehigh Valley Embassy Bank branch. All print photos will be returned and may be picked up at the Banana Factory, 25 W. Third St., Bethlehem, from May 1-14. Each submitted photo will be displayed on one of the Our Hometown Heroes banners on the SteelStacks campus and include the soldier's rank, branch, dates of service and hometown.

The Memorial Day Celebration presented by Embassy Bank includes three days of music, family activities and programming designed to salute all past and current members of the military. The weekend will conclude with a Memorial Service on May 28 honoring those who have lost their lives while serving and protecting our nation. Complete details on the 2013 Memorial Day events and activities at SteelStacks will be announced later this spring.

Life Choices Inc. of Phillipsburg is hosting a live and silent auction at the Grand Colonial on Route 173 in Hampton, NJ on Friday, May 31 from 7 to 9 p.m. All proceeds will go toward purchasing and renovating an unused convent in Phillipsburg, where Life Choices plans to open a women’s homeless shelter called Grandma’s House to assist women who are escaping domestic violence, are pregnant or who have young children.

"Be A Fan" Campaign

TD Bank, America's Most Convenient Bank®, will be joined by TD Ameritrade to support Special Olympics through its annual Be A Fan® campaign which began May 13, 2013.
 
The Be A Fan campaign, now in its 5th year, encourages TD customers and employees to raise funds to support their local Special Olympics chapters. Green and white wristbands, featuring TD Bank and Special Olympics logos as well as the Be A Fan slogan, will be available for $5 each at all TD Bank stores. 92% of all proceeds go to Special Olympics. Last year over $1.2 million was raised for Special Olympics chapters from Maine to Florida.
 
Donations can be made at a TD Bank near you directly at the teller counter or bring your loose change to their Penny Arcade coin counting machine. The Penny Arcade fee will be waived for all non-Customers making a donation.
 
The Be A Fan campaign runs now through June 30, 2013. Funds raised in each state go directly to the respective local Special Olympics chapter.
