30th Summer Gala Concert Series

The month of July ushers in the 30th season of Summer Gala Concerts by the Lenape Chamber Ensemble as top-flight musicians from New York and Philadelphia come back to Doylestown for three consecutive Saturday nights at 8:00 p.m. on July 9th, 16th, and 23rd.. Bucks County audiences will enjoy seeing many of their favorite artists return to the concert stage, including violist Danielle Farina, to be seen on TV later this summer as part of Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival.  She will be heard at the July 9th concert as she performs Mozart’s Duo for Violin and Viola in B Flat, along with Lenape Chamber Ensemble’s own Cyrus Beroukhim, violinist with the New York City Ballet.  Mozart wrote this duo for his friend, Michael Haydn (Josef’s brother), who was ill and unable to complete a series of six duos commissioned by the archbishop.  Mozart adapted his writing to Haydn’s style, signed Haydn’s name to this and another duo, thus saving the day for his friend and enabling him to get paid.

Robert Schumann’s Märchenbilder (“Fairy Tale Pictures”) for viola and piano is based on literary images, which he hoped listeners would envisage when hearing the music.  Danielle Farina is joined by Marcantonio Barone, prizewinning pianist and always a favorite at Lenape concerts.

Following intermission, a parade of stellar artists takes the stage for a stunning performance of the Sextet in C Major for strings, clarinet, horn and piano by Ernst von Dohnanyi, who is considered to be one of the builders of modern Hungarian musical life.  Written in 1935, the sextet features clarinetist Alan R. Kay of the Orpheus chamber orchestra, French hornist Karl Kramer-Johansen, of the Dorian wind quintet, Cyrus Beroukhim, Danielle Farina, cellist Arash Amini and pianist Marcantonio Barone.

Later concerts on July 16th and 23rd will present music by Schubert, Dvorak, Beethoven, Poulenc, and Mendelssohn’s charming sextet for strings and piano, composed when he was fifteen years old.

Lenape’s exciting and varied programs of chamber music, both familiar and new, are now enhanced by the fine acoustics and visibility of the Life Sciences Building auditorium, at Delaware Valley University.

The building is located at 700 East Butler Avenue on business Route 202, off the 611 by-pass at the State Street exit.  There is free parking at the entrance on New Britain Rd. and train service on the R5 from Philadelphia is available with a stop at the University parking area.

Concerts begin at 8:00 p.m. and audiences can meet and chat with the musicians at a champagne punch reception following each concert.  Tickets at $18 for adults, $15 for students and seniors, are available online, at the door, or by calling (610) 294-9361.

“We look forward to INDYCAR returning to ‘The Tricky Triangle’ this summer,” said Brandon Igdalsky, Pocono Raceway President and CEO. “Our track was designed for open-wheel cars and, given the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 in May, it made all the sense to have them back for this historic season of racing. We worked diligently with INDYCAR to make this happen and we both agreed it was important to keep our race on the 2016 schedule. This, coupled with the overwhelming response from teams, drivers and race fans, were all contributing factors to our mutual decision.”

In the mid-1990s, a decade after he showed the world and its airwaves that his soaring musical language included both Steinways and accordions, Bruce Hornsby took his family to the Annual Old Fiddlers’ Convention in Galax, a town in the Appalachian southwest of Hornsby’s native Virginia that has hosted the event since 1935.  The trip reconnected him with his Williamsburg youth, a time when bluegrass frequently provided an historical accent to mid-‘70s guitar rock, skittering and flowing out of high school gyms and trendy Georgetown bars, drawing halter-topped girls and suede-jacketed guys to Southeast festivals.

In 1965, with the Beach Boys out on tour, Wilson began session work on some of the most deeply personal recordings of his career. Inspired by The Beatles Rubber Soul, he challenged himself to create an immaculate musical masterpiece. A vast departure from the bands’ then commercial sound, the resulting "concept album" Pet Sounds achieved great critical success helping usher in a new musical landscape and hit the Top 10 in the US while topping the charts in the UK.

"It’s really been a trip to sit here and think about releasing Pet Sounds 50 years ago," says Wilson. "I love performing this album with my band and look forward to playing it for fans all across the world."

Brian Wilson is a Kennedy Center Honors recipient, a Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, and a U.K. Music Hall of Fame inductee. As a member of The Beach Boys, Wilson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and honored with The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.

Shenandoah and Pure Prairie League

When country music lovers talk about the greatest groups in the genre, Shenandoah is always at the forefront of any discussion. Fueled by Marty Raybon’s distinctive vocals and the band’s skilled musicianship, Shenandoah became well known for delivering such hits as “Two Dozen Roses”, “Church on Cumberland Road” and “Next to You, Next to Me” as well as such achingly beautiful classics as “I Want to be Loved Like That” and the Grammy winning “Somewhere in the Vicinity of the Heart” duet with Alison Krauss.

From their beginnings in mid-Sixties Ohio as a group of friends playing cover tunes to the present-day unit featuring founding member/pedal-steel innovator John David Call, veteran bassist Mike Reilly, propulsive drummer Scott Thompson and guitar ace Donnie Clark, PURE PRAIRIE LEAGUE continues to embellish the rich 43-year history of one of Country-Rock’s pioneering forces. As one reviewer recently wrote: “PPL’s sound combines sweet memories with edgy, contemporary muscle. Their vocals are as strong as Kentucky moonshine and the musicianship and performance skills are as sharp as a straight razor”.
