What’s New at Musikfest 2017!

Welcome to the 34th year of Musikfest! This year’s festival features over 400 different performers from across the nation, as well as Canada, Cuba, Denmark, The Netherlands, Scotland and South Korea, performing on a record 16 stages. Other highlights include the new Experienceplatz venue featuring the Architects of Air attraction, the Martin Guitar Stage at Yuengling Lagerplatz and expanded visual arts activities at our Spark Orthodontics Familienplatz family venue, which has moved to the Colonial Industrial Quarter this year.  Here’s a look at many of the new attractions and highlights for 2017:

New this year are free standup comedy shows Aug. 11-12 at the LVwithLove ComedyPlatz, presented by Lehigh Valley with Love Media and Never Again Radio at The Ice House, 56 River St., Bethlehem. More than 30 comedians will perform at six shows over the two days at the Ice House, an official Musikfest venue for 2017. Highlights include Blair Socci of MTV’s Ladylike and Guy Code vs. Girl Code; Shane Gillis, named 2016 Philly’s Phunniest at Helium Comedy Club; Dina Hashem of Comedy Central's Roast Battle; Dan Perlman, co-creator of the animated series That’s My Bus!; and Patrick Monahan, named one of Paste Magazine's 75 Best Twitter Accounts of 2016.  These comics, along with many more from New York and Philadelphia, will be performing alongside some of the Lehigh Valley’s best comics. Shows are 7, 8:45 and 10:30 p.m. both nights.

New Music/Venues:

Yuengling Lagerplatz

Two of Pennsylvania’s most recognizable and iconic brands, Yuengling and Martin Guitar, are partnering this summer to expand the musical offerings at Musikfest. The Martin Guitar Stage at Yuengling Lagerplatz, the festival’s 16th and newest performance stage, will feature acoustic sets by a number of festival artists, while also giving event attendees the opportunity to serve up their own performances during open mic sessions.

Launched last year to provide a new programming element for Musikfest attendees, Yuengling Lagerplatz is presented by D.G. Yuengling & Son, the nation’s oldest brewery, established in 1829. At Lagerplatz, guests can enjoy Yuengling Traditional Lager, Summer Wheat and other Yuengling beers; take part in fun games like jumbo Jenga and bean bags; and enter to win great prizes like Yuengling merch and tickets to Musikfest’s hottest concerts. This year, Yuengling has added to the experience by partnering with Musikfest and Martin Guitar to present more than 40 acoustic sets by festival artists. Among the many performers who will take the stage are Nalani & Sarina, twin sisters who recently won The Freshmen contest on mtvU with their video “Get Away;” country singer Erin Kelly; the female-fronted power-pop band Summer Scouts; and singer-songwriter Anthony Cubbage. C.F. Martin & Company is also giving members of the public the opportunity to showcase their talents during open mic nights. Individuals can register onsite by stopping by Yuengling Lagerplatz, and Martin will have several of its guitars available for participants to accompany them on their favorite song.

The new Experienceplatz venue, located at Main and Lehigh streets, features the new Architects of Air art installation, Wireless Disco, daily busker performances and interactive activations from festival partners like Think Energy, Rothrock Motors and PNC Bank, as well as a variety of food and beverage vendors. To accommodate the attractions of Experienceplatz, the festival’s Sparks Orthodontics Familienplatz is now located in the Colonial Industrial Quarter adjacent to Martin Guitar Handwerkplatz.

Patrons looking for convenient and close access to all the music, food and fun of Musikfest have a brand-new option this year as Moravian College and ArtsQuest partner to offer a publicly accessible parking lot on the college’s South Campus, located in the heart of the festival grounds. The Moravian College Parking Lot, dubbed Moravian College ParkPlatz, marks the first time ArtsQuest has been able to offer parking to patrons within the North Side of the festival grounds.

Parking on the Moravian College lot is limited to 30 vehicles daily and passes are sold on a first come basis. Each parking pass comes with an official Musikfest 2017 collector’s refillable mug, as well as a Moravian College Koozie. Passes, which cost $25, are available in advance only starting today, July 26, at www.musikfest.org or 610-332-3378.

Over the past few years, Uber has been a popular option for people arriving and leaving Musikfest and this year the festival has added a new location on the festival’s North Side at Walnut Street, near Red Stag Pub Liederplatz. Other Uber drop-off/pickup points include Old York Road at IBEW Local 375 Volksplatz and Lehigh Street by the Wooden Match on the North Side, as well as the intersection of Second and Founders Way on the SteelStacks Campus.

This year, nine new food vendors have been added to the well-loved lineup, featuring everything from pie in a cone to lobster mac & cheese! Highlights include a record six food trucks, the first appearance of local icon Hellertown Crossroads Hotel and Musikfest’s first all-vegan vendor, Try Vegan. New vendors are:

Baby Blues BBQ: A California restaurant featured on The Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, this new food truck based out of Philly offers crowd pleasers like the Smoked Pulled Pork Sandwich, St. Louis Ribs and Pig Candy Bacon.

Humpty’s Dumplings: Named 2016’s #1 Food Vendor of Bonnaroo by Rolling Stone Magazine, Humpty’s offers everything from Cheesesteak Dumplings and Roasted Veggie Dumplings to Apple Pie Dumplings.

Architects of Air presented by Think Energy

Katena Luminaria, a massive inflatable art installation that dazzles with its mix of light and color, welcomes visitors to the all-new Experienceplatz Aug. 4-13. Roughly the size of half a football field, visitors experience an array of light and color as they walk through a maze of winding paths and marvel at the structure’s 30-foot-tall domes.

Designed by British artist Alan Parkinson, Architects of Air has enchanted audiences around the world since 1992 with more than 600 exhibits in 41 countries, including appearances at Hong Kong’s Lantern Festival, the Kilkenny Arts Festival in Ireland and Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It’s been described as “walking through a stained glass window” by visitors, and following the release of Parkinson’s book, “The Most Beautiful: 20 Years of Architects of Air,” Gizmodo hailed the experience as “gorgeous” and “transformative.”

Guardian Life Insurance volunteers will be staffing the Architects of Air experience, which is wheelchair accessible and inviting to guests of special needs. Guests can explore Architects of Air, presented by Think Energy, Aug. 4, 6-10 p.m. and Aug. 5-13: noon-10 p.m. (last entry at 9:30 p.m.); cost is $5, payable at the door in Musikfest Food & Beverage Tickets.

Close Act Theater: BIRDMEN

Close Act Theater: PER-Q

This 19th century marching band creates a weird procession with a totally undefinable purpose. It frequently switches between humorous and melancholic, between hilarious and gloomy. PER-Q feels a little inconvenient, but it changes immediately when the soldiers start beating their drums. Performances take place Aug. 10-12 at 6 and 8 p.m.

The SteelStacks Comedy Triathlon

On Aug. 6, 11:15 p.m., in the Fowler Blast Furnace Room at the ArtsQuest Center, teams of comedians show off their skills at standup, improv and sketch/concept comedy, with the winning team getting their own SteelStacks show in the fall!
