‘Friends’ Reunion Special Finally Set to Film for HBO Max

The Friends reunion special is — at last — ready to roll.

The HBO Max special is set to film the week of April 5, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. It will bring stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer back together on the beloved comedy’s Warner Bros. soundstage to reminisce about the show’s starmaking impact and ongoing popularity.

HBO Max declined comment.

A premiere date for the special hasn’t been set yet, but it will likely come almost a year after the reunion’s intended debut — May 27, 2020, when HBO Max launched. The special was planned to celebrate the WarnerMedia-owned service becoming the exclusive streaming home for Friends and a draw for potential subscribers.

The reunion had initially been slated to film in March 2020, only to be delayed multiple times amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. Perry tweeted back in November that the special would tape in March, which turned out to be not very far off the mark.

Friends creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane are also set to be part of the reunion, which will film on Stage 24 at the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, the show’s home for the entirety of its 1994-2004 run on NBC. Kauffman, Crane, fellow Friends EP Kevin Bright and the six stars will all serve as executive producers of the special. Ben Winston (The Late Late Show With James Corden, the 2021 Grammys) will direct and exec produce. The special is produced by Warner Horizon Unscripted Television and Winston’s Fulwell 73.
