February 15th, 2020:The Penn State IFC/PHC Dance Marathon (THON) is the largest student run philanthropy in the world. The proceeds benefit the Four Diamonds Fund, conquering childhood cancer, at the Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA. During THON weekend, 700 dancers and thousands of supporters come together in the hopes of one day finding a cure for pediatric cancer. Whether standing for two days as a dancer, entering the crowd, taking care of the facility, or even standing in the bleachers, every person at THON plays a small part creating an amazing atmosphere of love, compassion, and understanding. This collective effort, involving more than 15,000 students, has become one of Penn State’s greatest and most unifying traditions.

February 29, 2020: Since the early 1960s, five-year survival rates for many blood cancer patients have doubled, tripled or even quadrupled. And many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are helping patients with other cancers and serious diseases. In fact, drugs first approved for blood cancers are now approved to treat patients with stomach cancers, skin cancers, and autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. March 4th, 2020: The Sword Tag Society’s 8th Annual All You Can Eat Spaghetti Dinner, Basket Raffle & Bake Sale. The event will be held at the Lehighton Recreation Center on South 8th Street in Lehighton. The dinner will be from 4:00pm until 8:00pm. The price covers unlimited spaghetti served plain, with butter, homemade plain sauce or meat sauce, drinks, dinner rolls, and salad. There will also be free musical entertainment. The proceeds from this event are to benefit the Sword Tag Society, the Police Unity Tour (a foundation that helps to support the family of fallen officers) and assistance in helping support a variety of local non profit organizations through the Sword Tag Society program itself.
March 6th, 2020: Senior Adults Gaining Enrichment (SAGE), an outreach program of Penn State Lehigh Valley for adults ages 55 and older, has announced the schedule for its spring 2020 four-part lecture series. Each SAGE session begins with coffee at 10:30 a.m., a talk by the featured speaker at 11 a.m., and lunch at noon. April 5th, 2020: To raise awareness and spotlight suicide prevention, Lehigh Carbon Community College has partnered with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to sponsor an Out of the Darkness campus walk on Sunday, April 5, on the Schnecksville campus.
Check in will start at 10 a.m. in the Community Services Center, and the walk will begin at 11 a.m. The route will take walkers around the rural Schnecksville campus. Fee to sign up is $10. All proceeds from the walk will go to the Lehigh Valley chapter of AFSP, supporting research, educational programs, public policy changes and support for survivors of suicide loss. April 18, 2020: The Students and Staff at Moore Elementary School are organizing an Autism awareness event titled “Moore for Autism.” This is our first event for this cause, and we are really excited to bring it to life. We are expecting to have over 500 participants (which will include students, staff, families and friends) join our movement. The Moore for Autism Event is a celebration of people who have been diagnosed with Autism, an event to increase awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorder, a fundraiser for the Lehigh Valley chapter of Autism Speaks, and a fun-filled night of movement, music, games and food! April 18th, 2020: This year the Saucon Valley Lions and the Gilman’s, from Lost River Cavern, will be celebrating our 50th year Gem, Mineral and Jewelry Show. The show was started by Bob Gilman in an era where collecting rocks and minerals was a passion. The shows started at the Marine training center in Bethlehem and in 1982 moved to the Saucon Valley High School. For many years Lion Ray Campbell was running the show and he has turned over the reigns to his daughter Amy. Under Amy’s guidance the show has grown, and this year’s show promises to be the best ever. The show is no longer just for rockhounds over the years it has expanded to include other areas. This year, the Basket Raffle will be held at our very own Tamaqua Elementary School, on April 24th and 25th, 2020. On Saturday, April 25th, the Main Event will be held from 11am – 4pm! Prizes will be drawn shortly after the conclusion of the event and you do not need to be present to win.
